I. Removal of the control
unit
- The control unit that houses the chip is located under the
driver’s seat.
- Move the driver’s seat to its rearmost position.
- Using a 10 mm socket, remove the four nuts securing the control
unit to the floor.
- Lift the control unit up, then forward.
- Remove the electrical connector by pulling back the stainless
steel retaining clip and rotating the plug back and away from
the control unit.
- Opening the control unit
II. Opening the control unit
- The control unit’s cover is held on by the crimped metal
tabs. These tabs must be carefully bent straight to allow the
cover to be removed.
- Separating the two circuit boards to gain access to the chip
requires extreme care.
- The next step is to separate the boards at the end away from
the electrical connector. You will see that the two boards are
connected with a ribbon cable, and to either side of the ribbon
cable are posts that hold the boards together. These posts are
connected with a ball and socket joint. Place a small screwdriver
in one of the slots of the socket side, and gently pry open. Placing
pressure only on the plastic strip the ribbon cable connects to,
and never to the circuit board itself, push the two boards apart.
First separate one side, then the other.
- With the back of the boards apart, lift the top board, gently
stretching the ribbon cable. With the board tilted up, turn the
box so you are looking at the electrical connector. At either
side of the top row of pins you will see vertical tabs holding
the top board to the box. Using a small screwdriver, push the
tabs in towards the center.
- Take the screwdriver and push down from above the top row of
pins. When the lip above the pins clears the connector housing,
you will be able to pull the top board back.
- Once away from the front of the box, the top board will unfold
like a book. The chip is on this board, not the fixed board.
III. Remove the old chip and install your new FabSpeed performance
chip.
- Identify the chip to be removed. It will be the only socketed
chip on the board. It will also have a silver-gray label with
a number stamped on it. The number will be: 1 267 35_ ___.
- Chips are “keyed” for direction. Look at the chip
and you will see that one end is notched. Note the direction of
the notch so you can line up the new chip properly. Installing
the chip backwards will damage your control unit. Make absolutely
sure you put the chip in correctly! You will also see a matching
notch on the socket as well as a painted rectangle on the circuit
board itself indicating the correct direction of the chip.
- Gently pry the chip up and out of the socket, working first
at one end and then the other so as not to bend the pins.
- Press the new chip into place. Again, make sure the chip is
oriented correctly (with the notch in the right direction). New
chips sometimes have their pins spread wider than the socket.
If this is the case, first push in one side and very gently press
on the chip to bend the pins in a bit. Then remove the chip and
do the other side until all the pins line up and the chips may
be pushed firmly into place.
- Double check the chip orientation before putting the box back
together in the reverse order of disassembly.
IV. Old chip storage
- Use the container your new chips came in to store the original
chip.
